After the outbreak of the Civil War, Grant, who had graduated from West Point in 1843, fought in the Mexican War, and resigned his commission in 1854, decided to rejoin the army. His letter to his father Jesse informs him that Ulysses will go to Springfield that day to tender his services to the government.
